Sylvia
By A.R. Gurney
Directed by Adam Fogelson
In playwright A. R. Gurney’s unusual romantic triangle, a man mired in a midlife crisis, unhappy at work, and spinning his wheels in a middle-aged marriage is befriended by a frisky friend at his neighborhood park. Bringing the part Lab, part poodle home to his and Kate’s empty nest disrupts their household and relationship, causing each of them to rethink what life and love mean. For Sylvia is no ordinary dog. She sits. She speaks. She sings. She intimidates. She clings to the wrong person. And she begins to chew a hole in Greg and Kate’s twenty-two-year marriage.
With redemption, romance, and readjustment at its center, A. R. Gurney’s Sylvia is a touching, witty, and delightful reinvention of what it means to be “man’s best friend.”
