The Shadow Box
By Michael Cristofer
Directed by Michael Lussenden
This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play draws three distinct family stories into a universal tale of mortality. Set in a west coast hospice, the stories are introduced individually. As the two-act play unfolds the stories begin to merge and eventually blend into a chorus that captures the range of thought and emotion for all who struggle with dying. Three families take up residence in private cottages to pass the Òlast daysÓ with a loved one. The Shadow Box opens by introducing the audience to a conventional working class family (Joe, Maggie, and Steve). The second family is comprised of a gay couple (Brian & Mark) and the ex-wife (Beverly) of the terminal patient (Brian). A mother (Felicity)-daughter (Agnes) relationship is found in the third cottage. Each of the families struggle with different levels of loss and all aspects of grief are given voice during the course of the play.
