The Nerd

By Larry Shue

Directed by David Houser

Willum Cubbert, aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman,a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. He has written Rick and told that as long as he lived Willium would do anything for him. Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly. But his delight fades when it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd". Rick stays on and on, his presence leading to one uproarious event after another. Until normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence - which is happily staved off by the surprising twist ending of the play.
