About Orpheus
Returns
This opera finds Orpheus (tenor), the mythical singer,
living as a hermit in the mountains.Ê
His beloved Harp (soprano)
laments that Orpheus hasnât sung or played since the death of his wife
Eurydice.Ê The Harp finally persuades
Orpheus to sing again. This attracts a group of endangered animals (the student chorus), who plead for his help and
protection.Ê It seems that scores of
animals are disappearing from the face of the earth, at an alarming rate: the
wily Pluto (baritone) and Persephone (mezzo soprano) have been
snatching creatures with the intention of creating an Underworld Zoo.Ê The animals and the Harp persuade Orpheus to
return to the Underworld where, through his sublime singing, he convinces Pluto
and Persephone to return the stolen creatures to Earth.Ê Pluto agrees, but he imposes one condition:
that Orpheus use his musical powers to remind humankind of its duty to preserve
the natural harmony of Earth and its resources.
Our adaptation treats themes of
abduction and rescue, the power of friendship, the power of music and the
necessity of taking action in the face of our planetâs environmental crisis. These
themes are set to the very noble music of Monteverdiâs Orfeo, the heart-wrenching music of Gluckâs Orpheus and Eurydice, and the light, breezy music of Offenbachâs Orpheus in the Underworld.Ê Students will recognize many familiar tunes,
including Gluckâs ãChe faro senza Eurydiceä and the ãCan-Canä from Offenbach.
The result is an irresistible combination of serious themes and high spirits.
