You Can't Take It With You
By George S Kaufman and Moss Hart
Directed by Marsha Heuer
Over 30 Sun Prairie High School students make up the cast and crew for this production, along with a litter of kittens and a few garden variety snakes. The play tells the story of two very different families coping with an economic downturn while pursuing their version of the American dream. The exacting Kirby family believes in rules, hard work, and sacrifice of “self” for economic security and status. In contrast, the delightfully “alternative” Sycamore family home operates more like a commune for friends and relatives who want a place to express themselves and love each other.
The sparks fly when the young Tony Kirby falls in love with Alice Sycamore and the two families meet and are forced to debate their conflicting values. This timeless play’s theme is alive and well today in our homes as we watch our political and social systems cope with the ever-changing landscape of our “American Dream.”
