Urinetown, The Musical
By Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann
Directed by Bryanna Plaisir and Becca Haven
Urinetown, the Musical, the satirical comedy, presents a dystopian world in which its citizens must pay to use the bathroom due to a water shortage. Bobby Strong, a citizen turned political advocate, rebels against the unethical price hike by the officiating firm, Urine Good Company. If one cannot pay the price and publicly urinates, it’s off to Urinetown they go. What and where is Urinetown? Why, that is explained further in Act 2!
This musical premiered in 2001 and features music by Mark Hollman and lyrics by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis. Through some exposition and good subject matter, the show satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics.
