Squirrels in the Attic

By Pat Lawrence

Directed by Elaine Rewolinski

Lindsay Spencer, a free spirited, single woman in her late twenties, returns to her parents’ apartment after she’s in an auto accident for which her father, Charles Spencer, feels guilty of causing. Charles dotes on his only daughter, but her mother, Florence Spencer, is a more realistic critic of her daughter’s shortcomings. Florence, loving, but ordered, lofty, and patronizing, is dismayed to learn that her husband has invited Lindsay to live with them while she recuperates from the auto accident. When Florence learns that Lindsay’s boyfriend, Claude (an aspiring comedian), is also moving in with them, she is furious. Florence gives Charles an ultimatum: either he uninvites them or Florence is leaving him … for good! The side-splitting conflicts of lifestyles, living arrangements, and Florence’s “secret life” not only bring about a greater understanding between mother and daughter, but also lead to a hilarious conclusion.

Characters

Florence Spencer – (F,50 – 60)
An attractive female in her middle to late fifties. Florence is a strong-minded woman who is used to ruling her roost with minimal interference, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Florence is only somewhat resigned to her adult daughter’s current lifestyle and strives to guide Lindsay in the proper direction at every opportunity.
Charles Spencer (M,50-60)
Florence’s husband of some thirty odd years. He occasionally displays a flash of independence, but overall he understands that Florence runs their lives and he accepts that without serious complaint. He absolutely dotes on their only child, Lindsay, and would grant her any request he possibly could.
Lindsay Spencer (F,20-35)
A cheerful, single young woman in her mid to late twenties who is searching for a life: perhaps, a career or a husband or both - she’s not sure yet. Lindsay is a spontaneous and free-spirited individual who takes each day as it comes and is little concerned about either short or long-range planning.
Claude (M, 20-35)
A somewhat sullen, self-centered young man in his mid to late twenties who is Lindsay’s current boyfriend. He sweeps up in his parents mortuary, but aspires to be a professional comedian.
Bill Payton (M,50-60)
Charles’s boss and owner of Payton Property Management, Inc. Bill is pompous, pretentious, and condescending. He is used to dominating everyone around him – except for Florence
