Ben Franklin & Baron von Steuben vs. the Paine County School Board

By Danielle Dresden

Directed by Emily Morrison Weeks

Interested in finding out how the Founding Fathers might react to contemporary controversies? Head out to Fort Atkinson for a special performance of Ben Franklin & Baron von Steuben vs. the Paine County School Board.

In this original play from TAPIT/new works Ensemble Theater, a high school instructor teaches that Baron von Steuben, the Revolutionary War hero, was gay… Conservative School Board members plot changes in district policies… And conflict erupts. Ben Franklin and Baron von Steuben step in from the Great Beyond to set the record straight, so to speak, in this witty, irreverent, and, yes, optimistic play about what happens when history speaks up for itself.

Ben Franklin & Baron von Steuben vs. the Paine County School Board is performed by Francisco Torres, Krystal Lonsdale, Liz Light, Issac Brieske, Donna Peckett, and Danielle Dresden.

Peckett and Dresden, TAPIT/new works’ producing artistic directors, play the parts of von Steuben and Ben Franklin in drag.

Following its premiere in May 2016, this production has showcased at the Arts Midwest Conference in Milwaukee in September and was performed for the Edgewood College community in November 2016.

The Café Carpe and TAPIT/new works Ensemble Theater, both founded in 1985, share a commitment to independence and originality. The Café Carpe is a one-of-a-kind establishment in Fort Atkinson – a family friendly café, bar, and listening room. TAPIT/new works Ensemble Theater pursues artistic innovation and community connection with Company-generated new productions and extensive community outreach.
