University Opera

University Opera is a cultural service of the School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Its mission is to promote professional training and practical performing experience for student singers, directors, conductors, and pianists, and, when possible, provide opportunities for student designers, actors, and dancers. Uncommon repertoire will be stressed. Showcases for faculty, alumni, and guest artists are presented when appropriate.

University Opera presents an annual season of two fully staged opera productions, as well as evenings of opera scenes and one-act operas. University Opera's mission is to cast students in roles, and the program features every level of singer from doctoral student to undergraduate music education major in principal and supporting roles. Recent seasons have included "Don Giovanni", "Die Fledermaus", "Falstaff", "The Secret Garden", and "Vanessa". University Opera offers Opera Workshop, a course dedicated to study of opera arias and scenes, stage movement, operatic singing, staging of scenes, and a presentation of a program of scenes and one-act operas, including repertoire such as "Riders to the Sea" and "Bon Appetit". In addition to our regular season, recent special events have included "La Tragédie de Carmen", "La Serva Padrona", "The Impresario", and an evening of opera at the Edgerton Performing Arts Center, featuring a one-act version of "Hansel and Gretel". University Opera presents guest artists in concerts and master classes. Students have the opportunity to perform around the state in outreach programs in schools and arts centers. We offer one of the few MM degrees in opera in the country, as well as a minor in Opera Production for DMA candidates. Productions with University Theatre provide the opportunity for students to perform in musical theatre. University Opera promotes professional training and practical experience not only for singers, but also for student pianists, actors, directors, and conductors.
