Downbeat Dance is centered in Madison, WI. We primarily teach and promote the Traditional African American Social Dances of Swing, Soul, Lindy Hop, Jazz, and Blues. It is our intention to respect the roots and traditions of these dances, yet foster their growth and evolution. While we nurture and water the roots, we teach the dancing itself as alive and breathing - having a life of its own leaving space to grow into new sunlight - not as a dead historical artifact . This dance is alive and unfolding! We are now inventing its future incarnations - all dancers.
