This annual variety showcase of Madison-area veteran women performers, both musical and spoken word, began in 2007. With auditions in the early fall, performances are usually in early winter.

Madison artist-actor Wendy Fern Hutton created 2007's The Lives and Loves of Elder Women, in memory of her mentor and acting partner, Lois Nowicki. Hutton noted the large number of talented and experienced women performers "of a certain age" around town. Her cynical friend, actor-director Jan Levine Thal, replied, "If only they could get parts." Few theatrical pieces include parts for women older than 40. Experienced actors may encounter difficulties getting cast. One woman reported that after many years of performing regularly she had auditioned for four years without a part. Madison is not alone; witness the fate of women over 40 in Hollywood in Rosanna Arquette's critically acclaimed documentary, Searching for Debra Winger.

The 2007 show, The Fabulous Crone Show: The Lives and Loves of Elder Women, played to sold-out houses attended by nearly 500 people.

The Fabulous Crone Show is a project of Positive Aging Theatre presented at Meriter Retirement Services and the Madison Senior Center.
