Glimpses of a Lost Gypsy

By Mark Eisman

Directed by Jan Levine Thal

A bittersweet comedy about love and loss. Although its setting is present-day, it references the heyday of the Broadway musical, a time of great musical numbers and happy endings. The characters are charming: A blind newspaper vendor who "sees" every woman as the woman he loved when he lost his sight. A bickering brother and sister who run a photo shop and "see" stories in the photos that could pose legal problems. A dancer who has grown old and moved into a different life from the one she envisioned. And the constant memory of a young, vibrant gypsy (a dancer who moves from show to show, always in the chorus)-- invisible to the other characters but 100 percent present for the audience. A dancing duo rounds out the cast, evoking the glamor of classic Broadway musicals. Together the ensemble weaves a story that is at once unique and universal about how we understand love, remember love, and find love, even after years of loneliness. It is a full-length play with one fifteen-minute intermission.
