Candida

By George Bernard Shaw

Directed by James Bohnen

Give this play the Triple S seal for sexy, suspenseful, scintillating. Also registers way up there on the laugh-o-meter. Candida (accent on the first syllable) is a woman of strength and sensibility, earthiness and charm. Her husband's a reverend of self, satisfaction and success.

Into the safe cocoon of their lives arrives an 18-year-old wild child of a poet. Soon worships his "Candy." She's become his muse. Tries to steal her away from the rev, who's really not amused. He's taught his wife to live life with honesty and heart. And now between the two men she must choose.

This one's a beauty, for sure. A razor sharp (ouch!) comedy. First produced in 1904, still has the power to rattle the cage of our 21st century views on marriage and relationships.
