Marat/Sade

By Peter Weiss

Directed by J. Patrick

The full title of the play tells the story: "The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum at Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade." Turbulent with dance, pantomime, songs, litanies, acrobats and tableaux, this icon of modern theatre overwhelms spectators with its complex weaving of time, place, and plot, of stage and historical figures, of reality and fiction, of scenes of cruelty and excess, of revolutionary rhetoric and surrealist imagery.
