Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

5/5/2009The School District of Janesville Summer School will be holding auditions for the classic musical “West Side Story.” The world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical that is one of the theatre’s finest accomplishments. Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
West Side Story is offered as a class and is considered an enrichment activity. The class is open to students from any school district that is currently enrolled in grades 8-11. Students must audition on May 4 & 5 @ 7pm at Parker High School Choir Room, 3125 Mineral Point Ave, Janesville, WI 53545. Students auditioning will need to sing a song from West Side Story. They may contact Jan Knutson for audition material. Students accepted into the class will need to register for summer school. The course offers direction in acting, singing and dance. The student will also learn about the technical aspect of the production such as set construction, lighting, costumes, make-up and sound. The class is limited to 50 students.
