STAGED READING: Two Sticks of a Drum

Edgewood College Departments of Theatre and Women's Studies will host a staged reading of Two Sticks of a Drum, a new play by Madison playwright Holly Walter Kerby. The play explores Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton's battle for equal rights after the Civil War and the role of their friendship in shaping and sustaining an independent woman's suffrage movement.

Holly Walter Kerby teaches playwriting at Madison Area Technical College and has had plays published and produced across the country. Maureen Ryan, performance faculty at Ohio State University, Artistic Director of Red Herring Theatre Ensemble in Columbus, and former Chicago-based director, will direct the staged reading. The roles of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony will be performed by Illinois State University Acting Faculty Janet Wilson and Lori Adams. Additional roles will be played by actors from Edgewood College and the Madison area.

Audience members are invited to a talk-back session moderated by Jeanne Leep after the reading. This discussion will give the playwright, cast, and director feedback needed to develop the play for national touring. Staged readings and discussions will also be held this summer at Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago and at The Ohio State University. The themes of Two Sticks of a Drum will interest those involved in women's studies, history, political science, and civics as well as playwriting and theater.

This reading is free and open to the public. If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact Dr. Jeanne Leep at Edgewood College at (608) 663-3222 or JLeep@edgewood.edu. Edgewood College is located at 1000 Edgewood College Dr., Madison WI, 53711.
