The Clean House

By Sarah Ruhl

Directed by Betty Diamond

Matilde, the Brazilian housekeeper of a married pair of doctors, hates housework. Coming from a family of joke tellers, whose mother died laughing at a joke told by her father, she feels it is her mission to create the funniest joke in the world. The lady of the house, Lane, has a sister who loves housecleaning, so her sister happily takes over the cleaning while Matilde works on creating the perfect joke. Trouble comes when Lane’s husband reveals that he has found his soul mate in a cancer patient he has treated. This wildly funny play is a whimsical and poignant look at class, comedy, and the true nature of love.
