Picnic

By William Inge

Directed by Miranda McClenaghan

Picnic takes place over the Labor Day weekend in a small Kansas town early 1950s. The setting is a shared backyard of two houses owned by women looking for options. However, options are few and far between for the beautiful Madge and her intelligent and independent younger sister, Millie. They yearn for more than the life of domesticity and listen to the distant train whistle with hope for anything outside of their “small town.” Dating the smart and reliable Alan Seymour, Madge’s life seems set. That is until Hal, a dangerously handsome drifter, comes along and gets the whole town interested in who he is and what he is up to. Sparks instantly fly between Madge and Hal but can she really reject all she’s known to follow a pounding heart?

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Critic’s Circle Award, William Inge depicts the pleasure, pain and desperation of those willing to risk everything in order to feel something.
