Kanopy Dance Company's Martha Graham: (R)evolution in Black & White

By Kanopy Dance Company

Directed by Lisa Thurrell, Robert Cleary Artistic Directors

Presented by Urban Land Interests and Custer Financial Services

Masterwork re-staging:
Martha Graham’s iconic “Heretic” (1929)

Guest Artists: Miki Orihara, former Martha Graham Company Principal Dancer; Martin Løfsnes, Artistic Director of NYC 360˚Dance Company and former Martha Graham Company Principal Dancer; Greg Blackmon, dancer 360˚Dance; Senri OE, Sony Award winning composer and pianist; and Zada Cheeks, Chicago freelance dancer.

A figure in white surrounded by bodies in black. The rebel against the crowd. The outsider versus the status quo. The heretic ostracized from the masses.

Martha Graham was a truly revolutionary dancer and choreographer. She created original stage pictures with dancers’ bodies that explored the depth and diversity of human emotions. To honor her legacy and share Martha Graham’s stunning vision with modern audiences, Kanopy will perform her masterwork “Heretic” (1929) re-staged by Bessie Award winner and former Martha Graham Company Principal Dancer, Miki Orihara. As part of the concert Ms Orihara will perform a piece from her internationally renowned solo concert, “Resonance,” in collaboration with SONY award winning composer and jazz pianist Senri Oe.

We also welcome Martin Løfsnes to our stage, another former Principal Dancer with Martha Graham Dance Company and the Artistic Director of New York-based 360˚ Dance. Mr. Løfsnes premiers his “Introspective Mirage” performed by Kanopy dancers. Mr. Løfsnes and his 360˚dancer Chuck Wilt will perform a new duet “As of Yet, Untitled”. Kanopy’s CoArtistic Director Robert E Cleary presents his gritty duet “Bound & Determined,” first performed in Minneapolis, now restaged for Kanopy Dance Company with guest Chicago dancer Zada Cheeks. “Cassandra’s Cry,” a Graham-influenced work by Kanopy Artistic Director Lisa Thurrell presents an interwoven, frenetic mesh of movement. Like a heretic, Cassandra was cursed by the gods that she could foretell the future but no one would believe her.

Re-staging of “Heretic” licensed through Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance.
