Janesville School District Summer School presents Hairspray, a musical based on the John Waters film by the same name, is about Tracy Turnblad , a plump teenage girl from Baltimore who dreams of dancing on the local TV dance show, ¨DThe Corny Collins Show.¡¬
While her father tells her to follow her dreams, her mother Edna reminds her that she doesn't look like the girls on that show.
Through a twist of fate, Tracy wins a role on the show and becomes a celebrity overnight. Although she has now won a coveted spot on her favorite show, Tracy has also earned the wrath of the most popular girl in school ¨C a girl whose mother just happens to operate the local television station. It¡¯s not soon after Tracy starts on ¨DThe Corny Collins Show¡¬ that she begins to see the racial tension on the set. Inspired by her friends and the need for equality, Tracy goes to great lengths to integrate the races on her favorite program.
From the 1960¡¯s style dance music to the soulful rhythm and blues, Hairspray is sure to get audience members dancing in the aisles! And while Bay Area audience members will thoroughly enjoy the music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman, they will also encounter some of the injustices that occurred in of parts of American society in the 1960s ¨C and, how just one person can make a difference.

The School District of Janesville Summer School will be holding auditions for the Big Fat Broadway Musical ¡°Hairspray! Sunday, May 1 at 6:30pm and Monday, May 2 at 6:30pm. The auditions are open to students from any school district that is currently enrolled in grades 8-11. Students must audition on May 1 or 2 @ 6:30pm at Parker High School Choir Room, 3125 Mineral Point Ave, Janesville, WI 53545. Students auditioning will need to sing a song from Hairspray. They may contact Jan Knutson for audition material. Students casted in hairspray will need to register for summer school. The course offers direction in acting, singing and dance. The student will also learn about the technical aspect of the production such as set construction, lighting, costumes, make-up and sound. The class is limited to 40 students.
