Dickens in America

By James DeVita

Madison Repertory Theatre is thrilled to present special holiday performances of James DeVita’s Dickens in America, featuring James Ridge as Charles Dickens.
In late 1867, the great Charles Dickens, the world’s most famous writer; author of Little Dorrit, The Pickwick Papers, Dombey and Son, Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, and many other hugely successful novels toured America for the second time with his brilliant series of readings from his works.  Constant overwork had worn the great man down, but despite warnings from his doctors, Dickens continued to perform night after night for the public he adored.  Finally, however, fatigue and illness forced Dickens to cut his tour short.  He never made it to the Midwest as planned before his death in 1870.  Playwright James DeVita has decided to rectify that unfortunate turn of events by creating a rare opportunity to hear Dickens bring alive his characters from masterpieces such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and A Christmas Carol as he would have done onstage in Madison, Wisconsin in 1867.  Relive the magic and words of this literary master in what might have been his last public reading – all in the intimate confines of Overture Center’s The Playhouse.
