Kanopy is in its 30th year of excellence in teaching dance to children and adults, beginners through professionals in downtown Madison. Kanopy offers classes in modern dance technique, improvisation, repertory, choreography and theatre production. Kanopy fosters technical and creative development in support of the young artist; classes nurture self awareness, confidence & group spirit. Kanopy student performances are open to the public. In their concerts, the student's own choreography is featured, as well as work created for the students by the Director and Kanopy Dance Company members. Extra rehearsal time may be required.
The Kanopy Dance Ensemble, made up of students from the advanced class, has performed at the International Youth Arts Festival at the Union Theater, the Oscar Mayer Theater, Community Centers, Dane County Fair, UW Music Hall and elsewhere. The Ensemble has performed on tour with Kanopy Dance Company; and students have produced their own sell out concerts at Brave Hearts and Oakwood Village Theatres.
All students are invited to perform in school concerts, however participation is not mandatory. As dance is a performing art, this activity is an important part of dance education and most students choose to participate. Students interested in professional careers in dance and who have plans for future study in major dance centers around the country will be assisted and advised. Recent Kanopy graduates have earned scholarships to the Martha Graham School, North Carolina School of the Arts, & University of Minnesota. Kanopy is a 501(c)( 3) non-profit arts organization and welcomes all who wish to attend.
