Encore Studio for the Performing Arts
Founded in September of 2000, Encore is the only professional theatre company for people with disabilities in Wisconsin and one of very few in the United States. Also employing trained actors as support individuals, Encore strives to nurture these artists and assist them in reaching their full artistic potential. Encore's home theater is the Bartell Theatre, in Madison, WI; however they also play to conferences in Madison, throughout Wisconsin, and beyond. Many actors have also appeared elsewhere in professional theater, video and film, and are always available for these projects.
Encore has produced over twenty original productions primarily focusing on people with disabilities. Previous productions have included To Love or Not to Love, vignettes dealing with sexual abuse, relationships and human sexuality in the disabled community, Health Scare, about medical institutions and services, Let Us Pray, discussing religion, Real Life, which premiered in November 2004 and played to sold-out houses and is enjoying its second encore, and Acts to Grind, an evening of one act plays dealing with everything from politics and religion to friends and pizza.
