The Cabaret on Main is the latest effort by Marc Semrow and Jan Conrads, who founded the Stoughton Opera Company and introduced singing waiters to Southern Wisconsin. Their concept for the Cabaret was inspired by their many years of experience with this dinner-style theater format in Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as their careers as professional musicians.
The Cabaret on Main is housed in a newly renovated prime store front located
at 121 East Main Street. The façade is reminiscent of the 1885 original
and the interior has been lavishly restored to its Victorian splendor. The
13-foot high wood ceilings, oak flooring and ornately papered walls create
an appealing, unique dining space as well as an excellent acoustic environment
for the young professional singers who wait your tables and perform works in
a variety of musical styles as well as your requests, which is the hallmark
of manager Marc Semrow’s restaurant concepts.
The stage is home to a wide range of music-- show tunes, arias, and international
classics, to popular standards, and patrons' requests--performed by the singing
waiters. After all dinners are served, these same singers then assemble to
perform a half-hour show, which consists of highlights from standard musicals
or themed revues.
The seating is a combination of restaurant and theatre, and each seating
lasts approximately 2-3 hours. Reservations are strongly recommended, due
to the unique format and intimate theater space.
There is no charge for the entertainment offered at the Cabaret on Main - it comes with your dinner. Shows are arranged by Music Director and pianist Jan Conrads and usually run for at least one month.
