Clowning and Circus Techniques

Teaching Artist: Jacob Mills

Mime and juggler Jacob Mills offers a full theatrical circus experience as young performers explore masks, movement, mime, juggling, and tight wire (36 inches high above the Earth's surface). Students will study the value of physical expression and a variety of mime forms. Solo and group improvisational exercises use masks from Switzerland and the Italian Theatre. Clown Character and Circus Skills will be an intregral part of this action-filled workshop, and students will learn basic 3-ball juggling techniques, and the art of balancing objects on the nose.

Performance Ensembles - Ongoing - (posted by MadCAP School of the Arts)

MadCAP is currently accepting enrollments for their School of the Arts Performance Ensembles. There are spots available in each of the k-12 Musical Theatre Ensembles as well as the Opera Ensemble and Originality Works. Each ensemble is directed by professional and experienced musicians, actors, directors, and performers.

The performance ensembles meet once a week and work on quarterly projects. In the first and fourth quarter performers will prepare fully staged selections from popular Musical Theatre. These projects will be presented in MadCAP’s new venue: Promenade Hall of the Overture Center. During the 2nd quarter the performers will prepare and be involved in a benefit concert in the Wisconsin Dells, and during the 3rd quarter students in the Performance Ensembles will serve as the chorus for MadCAP’s March production of "Willy Wonka" (directed by Paul Milisch). Students enrolled in Performance Ensembles are also eligible to audition for lead roles in "Willy Wonka", which would involve additional rehearsal commitments.

MadCAP is pleased to offer private and semi-private Acting classes starting this fall. The lessons are taught by Paul Milisch and the curriculum is tailored to each individual performer. The classes may be taken individually, or in groups of 2-4.

The overall focus of the program is to provide performers technical skills to be successful on stage while developing a stage persona by which the actor can let go into their artistic expression. Jazz is a progressive form of dance that uses traditional ballet technique and is performed to the latest upbeat music. Jazz is presented through creativity, style, and fast skillful movements. All levels offered. Ages 7-adult

Tap is a form of dance based on rhythmic patterns. This class is taught under the Al Gilbert method, with our own style and pizzazz to make it fun and innovative. all levels offered. Ages 5-adult.

Lyrical dance is choreographed to interpret the emotions of the music with the intention that the audience will feel the lyrics to the song. Lyrical is a technically strong creative mixture of both ballet and jazz. Ballet background is required. Ages 11-adult.

Worship Dance is dance class that is done to all christian pop and rock music with the purpose of glorifying God.

Tanya Adkins has over ten years experience teaching. She has choreographed countless musicals including Fame and Cabaret. Tanya has choreographed commercials and concerts. She has had the opportunity to dance with choreographers for Madonna, Prince, Brittney Spears and The MTV Music awards. Tanya won the "Best Choreography Award" at Dance Idols Of America, and danced with the semi-professional dance company Mid West Movement for 5 years.

Class meets every SUNDAY NIGHT, 6:30 - 8 pm.
Location: Kanopy Dance Studio, 341 State St.
Cost: $12 per class or 4 for $40

Rhythms from Guinea and Mali, on Djembe and Dunun. Multiple parts, including first and second accompaniment djembe, bass djembe, ballet-style dunun and traditional dunun (3 bell parts). This class is open to all levels, though it is geared toward serious learners. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of technique and rhythm, while more advanced students learn solo phrases and repertoire. Experienced drummers are guaranteed a new challenge.

Paddy Cassidy has studied and performed drums for over ten years. He has studied djembe and dunun in Guinea and the USA with artists from Les Ballets Africains and Ballet Djoliba. Paddy currently performs with the UW Dance Program and WADOMA, and has been a guest instructor for the UW percussion studio.
